UPDATE: Is this really the end of Oprah’s Book Club?

When the imminent end of The Oprah Winfrey Show was announced last November, the Chicken Littles of the publishing world went into fits. I posted on November 24th, 2009 that I disagreed with the rampant speculation that Oprah’s book club would end as well, and believed there was no evidence to support such a claim.

Sometimes blogging is about I-told-you-so moments, and this is one of those for me. With the announcement on her show today that Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom is the new book club pick, “Oprah also denied what she called ‘rumors that this will be my last book club pick.’ She said: ‘I’ll continue to pick books all season long, and the book club will go with me to the Oprah Network.’” (Source: Publishers Weekly)

Moral of the story: don’t say the sky is falling every time you feel a drop of rain. (Or an acorn…)

  • Oprah is no dumb business woman. Of course she’ll take the book club with her. I think we’ll find that Oprah will not miss any opportunities to continue her commercial success. And, truly she’s earned it, so why should she?
